C.C. Spaulding High School
C.C. Spaulding High School is located in the southern section of Spring Hope in Nash County. The formal educational system for blacks in Spring Hope began in the early 1920's with the establishment of Meeks School. This was a two room, two teacher school located near Hwy 581-S in the vicinity of present day Meeks Cemetery. Dissatisfaction with this location led to the use of the old Odd Fellows Hall as a school facility.
A firm realization of the importance of education for all children led a determined group of black citizens to petition the county of Nash for help in building a school for black children in this area. In 1921, community leaders and the principal secured the promise of matching funds from the Rosenwald Fund managers and Nash County officials. As a result of the untiring efforts of the black citizenry to raise money to match funds for this school, the first school building was built in 1926. It was named the Spring Hope Colored High School.
Tragedy struck in the life of the school and this building was destroyed by an early morning fire during its first year of existence. For a short period during the school year of 1926-1927, classes were held in the Baptist churches of St. Stephen and New Hope. After this tragic loss, Nash County took the initiative to replace the building. The result was the present brick building facing School Street, which housed classrooms and the lunchroom.
In the 1930’s a wooden-framed building for agricultural classes and a tin-covered gymnasium were built -- both of these buildings have since been demolished.
During this same period, some outlying schools were consolidated with the school. This increased enrollment resulting in a condition of over-crowdedness. The auditorium and stage were converted to classroom use.
Some relief from the inconvenience of overcrowding came with the construction of a separate high school building in the year 1941. This building faced Pine Street and housed the office of the principal, the library, a teacher’s lounge, supply and storage and four classrooms.
The high school department moved into its new quarters and voted to name the school for Dr. Charles Clinton Spaulding.
In 1952, six additional classrooms were built. The construction for the present auditorium was begun in the school year of 1954-1955.
A four-room classroom building was constructed in the year of 1958. This building presently accommodates three fifth grades, music an art room and two bathrooms.
Since the onset of integration, Spaulding has been the object of much organiza-tional change. In 1969, the pattern changed to K-8 when grades 10 through 12 were transferred to Southern Nash Senior High, the comprehensive secondary school for southern Nash County. In 1970-71, the 7th and 8th grades came back to Spaulding, giving it a new name of Spaulding Middle School.
For the school year of 1980-1981, the middle school grades of Spaulding School were transferred to Southern Nash Junior High School to join the 9th grade students from the southern portion of Nash County. As a replacement, grades
4-6 came back to the Spaulding campus and helped to re-name the school Spaulding Elementary School, the name it held since the school year of 1981-1982.
Presently the school is named the Spaulding Family Resource Center.
